Made of Macassar Ebony inlaid with silverDimensions : L=115cms/45ins ; W=80cms/31ins ; D=39cms/15ins
I wanted to make a modern piece that combined my love of engineering and fine wood. The client had a fine collection of English roadsters, Bentleys and Aston Martins, and felt the piece reflected these qualities. The legs are made from highest grade bright steel, hand polished and lacquered and the top made from Macassar Ebony inlaid with silver and finished with heat resistant french polish finish.
The "De Cesare" cocktail cabinet
Made of Macassar EbonyDimensions : H=95cms/37ins ; W=38cms/15ins ; D=30cms/12ins
This illuminated cabinet was made for clients who had a desire to store 12 bottles with glasses in a confined space and loved their Apple computer. The continuous curved form gives it a very sensual feel whilst the Macassar is warm and strong. The aim was to produce a quiet yet striking piece and can be made in many other fine grained woods.
Cottage table
Made of Brown Tiger OakDimensions: L=102cm/40in : W=76cm/30in : H=44cm/17in
This table was designed for a country home with views of a delightful garden directly in view. It is a simple statement using one of my favourite woods. The triangulation of the top reveals the amazing grain which by finishing with 10 coats of the lightest shellac plus cornoba wax creates a stunning glow. Further enhancement to the otherwise simple base is the result of the leaf carving by the famous Armenian, Georgi Mkrtichian, whose work for the V&A plus many other galleries is truly delightful.
Sofa table
Made of English Oak Dimensions: L=160cm/63in; H=72cm/28in; D=45cm/18in
This table was made for a client with a sofa acting as a room divider who requested a table that would enhance the back of the sofa on which flowers could be placed. I decided this warm wood and design lent itself to some of the other Moroccan influences in the room. I used very traditional construction methods employing animal glues and hand cut veneers.
Menorah
Made of solid Australian plain tree with the body
in Macassar Ebony.Trimmed and decorated in stirling silver
This Menorah departs from the traditional "Hanukah" Menorah with its 8 stems and candles . It is related to the Menorah of the Ist Temple , drawings and engravings of which are found in antiquity and is the symbol of the first tribes of Israel . The shape and quality of the silver enable light to be reflected continuously.
Console table
Made of Bocote wood with added silver inlay and foot
Dimensions: W=110cm/43in; H=85cm/33in; D=20cm/7in
This table, a derivative of the sofa table above, was made for a client who had limited space in her hallway but wanted an elegant feature piece.
Display cabinet
Made of American Walnut and MapleDimensions: H45cm/17in; L101cm/40in; D30cm/12in
In general I don't like display cabinets so when I was asked to make one I chose a form that would not hide the objects behind a screen of glass. The cabinet is therefore deliberately theatrical in design and the objects displayed more as actors on a stage rather than the backdrop. Perhaps that description is too clever but the piece did work well and the client was very happy!
